FUTURE STARS
ABOUT
THE START
THE BEGINNING OF FUTURE STARS
Future Stars started in 2015 in the community of Overcome, Cape Town. It began with a local ex-gangster who recognized the needs of the community he came from. An after-school program was initiated to engage the youth, but soon they discovered that mainly girls attended while the boys were playing soccer outside.
Miranda, together with her husband Mansour, became part of this program and recognized the need for father figures and positive role models among the children and teenagers in this underprivileged community.
They purchased soccer balls and invited the children to the field. That's how Future Stars began, and soccer continues to serve as a platform for building relationships with the children, being positive role models, sharing the love of Jesus, and providing education. Our goal is to raise responsible leaders who will serve as role models in their own community.
WHERE TO FIND US
Future Stars is located in Overcome and Capricorn, also called Vrygrond: a vibrant and multi-cultural township community in the Cape Flats of Cape Town, South Africa.
It is one of the oldest informal settlements in the Cape. Vrygrond was originally a fishermen’s village. Today, Vrygrond is home to a diverse but impoverished community of people from across the Cape, South Africa and the African continent.
With over 45,000 people living in this one square kilometre of land, the community faces several challenges, such as gang activity, unemployment, overpopulation, shack fires, volatility, gender-based violence (GBV), and extreme poverty.
The people of Capricorn are still a friendly township, even through their affliction;
however, it is still very much in need of strong leaders who can bring this divided and troubled community together.
